There is a particular quiet that watercolour holds better than anything else, a quiet made of light, breath and slow movement.
In Sailboats at Rest, I wanted to stay close to that stillness. Five small boats, each touched with a different hue such as blue, yellow, brown and red, drifted gently into place as I painted, settling on the page as if guided by their own calm rhythm. Their reflections softened immediately, dissolving into the water with that delicate transparency only watercolour can create.
The muted clouds and the distant shoreline came later, grounding the scene without disturbing its silence. What stayed with me throughout the process was the sense of time pausing, as if the world had agreed to remain still for a moment longer.
